3.4 Resolution

The resolution test can be applied to generic resolution charts with slanted edges.

- Select the test chart.
- Select the test (Resolution Analysis).
- Open the test image.
- Select the regions of interest.
- Click Analyse.

The resolution test computes also the chromatic aberration (CA).

The resolution test computes the horizontal and vertical modulation transfer functions (MTF) and line spread functions (LSF), which can be used to define the horizontal and vertical resolutions and the horizontal and vertical chromatic aberrations (CA).

The threshold value of the resolution is equal to 50% (MTF50) and the resolution is expressed in line widths per picture height (LW/PH). The chromatic aberration is expressed in pixels (px).

The resolution can vary remarkably depending on the illumination and the quality of the test chart. Also the decoding of the test image and the noise removal algorithms of the imaging device can have remarkable effect on the resolution and the chromatic aberration. As a consequence, the results should be analysed carefully.

The resolution test draws four plots. The first two plots include the horizontal and vertical modulation transfer functions (MTF). The second two plots include the line spread functions (LSF) of the red and blue channels and the Y channel.
